Chanel Buzz

Remember all the buzz about Chanel’s Jade nail polish? (It was going for over $100 on Ebay.) Get ready for a similar response to Particulière 505 (at the left), the mauve-y, grayish shade that’s already sold out on Chanel’s website.

And there’s even more buzz about the limited edition temporary tattoos inspired by the fake ink seen on the models during Chanel’s spring 2010 runway show in Paris. The tattoos arrive in Chanel boutiques on March 1.

OPI Axxium Soak-Off Gel Lacquers

OPI-Axxium-Soak-Off-Gel-Lacquers

I got my nails did yesterday at Gloss. While I was there, I overheard two women discussing OPI’s new Axxium Soak-Off Gel Lacquers. Here’s the deal, according to Allure magazine, “OPI’s new salon-only treatment deposits a thin coat of color that is as close to the strength of acrylics as a lacquer can get and still be removable with soaking. The process of applying the polish is the same as a regular manicure–a basecoat, two coats of color, and a clear topcoat. Then each coat is dried under UV light for two minutes, which activates this resilient formula. The treatment is about twice as much as a traditional manicure, and comes off with a special acetone-based remover. It can stay chip-free for two weeks, the company says.”

According to Allure’s tester, the manicure took about 45 minutes and did not chip after three weeks. (!) Since I spend about $12-$15 on my manicure every week, I would totally pay $30-$35 to not have get them done for three weeks! Plus, you can get OPI Axxium in over 25 top OPI shades, like You Don’t Know Jacques, Lincoln Park After Dark and Big Apple Red. If the polish loses its shine, regular polish can be applied on top of the soft gel. You can also get “fills,” or color touch-ups to shade in the area of new growth to extend the life of the Axxium manicure.

Since Gloss does OPI Axxium nails, I’m totally doing this next week. I will report back and let you know how it goes… My only hesitation is that it will be too harsh on my nails, since to dissolve the gel formula, you have to soak your nails in a strong acetone-based solvent for 15 to 20 minutes. That seems semi-scary. We shall see…

American Apparel Nail Polish

np_Tester2

Would you buy nail polish from the legging’s mecca, American Apparel? The company is betting you will. “We think this nail polish captures what American Apparel is all about — a Made in the USA, high-quality product in a beautiful range of colors. It’s a venture of families in manufacturing, from the factory in which the polish is made to the Nail Lacquer logo created by Dov Charney’s uncle, the noted graphic designer Israel Charney,” said Marsha Brady, a creative director for American Apparel.

Each of the 18 colors in the primary offering evokes an important part of American Apparel. One is the color of raw cotton, while another — a minty green color called Office — was matched to the color of an accounting notepad found on the seventh floor of American Apparel’s headquarters. Factory Grey is the actual shade used to paint all floors of the company’s manufacturing operations, while Hassid – dark black – is a nod to American Apparel’s Jewish roots. Even the collection’s custom shade of red, “Downtown LA”, took the area where the factory is located as its inspiration.

The polishes will be sold exclusively in American Apparel shops worldwide and online. Price: $6 per bottle or $15 for a 3-pack.

I Want: Dickweed

Bleach-Black-Dickweed

The girls from BleachBlack already have an ultra-successful jewelry line at Urban Outfitters and are now launching their own nail polish line. The first color is a hybrid of Japanese Beetle Green and Malachite Stones with a hint of Metallic Shine. Um, hello. Awesome. Annoyingly though, this is a pre-order item and is expected to ship after Christmas. (sadface.) Also, the polishes’ name? “Dickweed” Aw! I think I’m in love. This is the first of many shades to be available on Needsupply.com by the fashion blogging duo, Kristin and Valerie. “There’s too much blushy pink going on,” says Kristin of BleachBlack’s polish line. “Fashion has become way too serious. We are honestly just fucking around and have fun with this project.” Price: $12.95

OPI You Don’t Know Jacques

Gwyneth-Paltrow-OPI-You-Don’t-Know-Jacques

Oh, check out Gwyneth Paltrow with what looks like OPI You Don’t Know Jacques! It’s an OPI polish from fall 2008, but I still love it. In fact, I painted my nails with it last night. I re-did the horror that was OPI Lincoln Park After Dark Matte. Ugh. Fine for toes, not for fingers.

OPI-You-Don’t-Know-Jacques

OPI You Don’t Know Jacques is a perfect neutral, sorta warm taupey shade that works with everything. Everytime I get sick of super dark nails, I go back to You Don’t Know Jacques. Love it!

How To: Glitter Nail Polish

3702203195_bd48f6329a_large

I’ve been super lazy at the nail salon lately, opting for OPI Matte polish on my fingers and my toes just because it dries so super fast. I’m not even particularly crazy about the matte look on my fingers, although I kinda like it on my toes and it seems to last forever there. But on my nails it seems to chip at the ends faster than regular polish. But still, so conveniently fast. Right now I’m wearing Russian Navy Matte:

But matte isn’t very festive, and ’tis the season to be festive. What’s more festive than glittery nail polish? I love the look of really intensely glittery nail polishes, but I never see the really cool ones at the nail salon (because they’re expensive, I guess). But I found a good solution on bellasugar: make your own! That way you can have a polish that looks great and is the exact color and level of glitter you want. Here’s how:

  • Get some fine-size flake craft glitter or medium size if you want it really chunky.
  • Find some clear nail polish (if you have a half-full bottle, all the better.)
  • If you have a full bottle, pour half the nail polish into another container.
  • Funnel your glitter into the half-full polish bottle.
  • Shake it up.
  • Apply!
